Ballentine Vineyards provides the backdrop for a great Napa Valley love story.
Mr. Van and the future Mrs. Betty Ballentine met as children. Betty was part of a piano recital at the valley’s Tucker Farm Center, and she still vividly recalls Van’s glances. It turned out that both were winery kids, and even though they attended different schools, they eventually married. It is a happy marriage that has lasted more than 50 years.
The only thing more enduring in Van’s life has been the annual picking of the winegrapes. He now has worked more than 60 harvests in the valley, and the family now owns 100 acres of vineyards in three prime valley locations. Through most of those years, the Ballentine family sold the bulk of their grapes to such famous names as Mondavi, Ravenswood and Rosenblum.
They began making and bottling some of their own wines in 1992, and the Block 9 Reserve Zinfandel is among our favorites — floral, fruitful, spicy... and crafted with love.
California's own grape variety. Red Zinfandel (not to be confused with "white" Zinfandel) can produce full-bodied wines packed with ripe berry fruit and smooth tannins. Flavors of blackberries and spicy pepper.
