About This Wine

What’s one word that comes to mind when you think of Merlot?

That’s right: mellow. Of all the red wines made around the world, none can compare to Merlot when it comes to pure sipping pleasure. Devoid of the sometimes harsh tannins that can make certain renditions of Cabernet Sauvignon a bit “strong” for many people, Merlot pleases the nose and palate without assaulting them.

A wonderful example is the 2008 California Merlot from Cloudcrest Winery. Open the bottle, pour a glass and take a sip, and you’ll see what we mean. It’s a beautifully balanced wine that emphasizes the fruit flavors of the variety, and becomes more interesting with the addition of other aromas and flavors garnered from aging in oak barrels.

Cloudcrest sources its Merlot grapes from a handful of quality-focused growers, then adds small amount of other red varieties to further “smoothen” the cuvee. The finished product is flavorful and very easy-drinking — the very definition of mellow.

About Merlot

Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon but with less tannin and fruit. Delivers earlier maturing wines. Often blended with Cabernet; on its own may soften with age, though fruit flavors may fade.

Light, but very dry compared to most sauvignon blancs we have received from the club.
