What do Cabernet Sauvignon and rock star Tom Petty have in common?

In a word: royalty. Petty fans will readily recall these lyrics: “It’s good to be king, and have your own world... it helps to make friends, it’s good to meet girls.” And in the world of wine, the long-reigning king is Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, Cabernet Sauvignons and blends where the variety predominates are some of the most prized wines produced in California. And in 2009, Alderwood Creek Vineyards crafted an excellent “King Cab.”

DNA genetic fingerprinting research at the University of California at Davis has revealed Cabernet Sauvignon to be a cross between the Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc grapes. The variety is California’s most widely planted red winegrape, with 75,048 acres reported in 2008.

Alderwood Creek’s 2009 Cab is rich and flavorful, but best of all, it’s ready to drink now. And that’s good news, because as Tom Petty would tell you, “The waiting is the hardest part.”
