About This Wine

Merlot is the second leading red varietal (after Cabernet Sauvignon) in America today.

But if Alderwood Creek Vineyards has anything to say about it, Merlot may one day surpass Cabernet in that regard. Alderwood Creek makes a number of wines, but its focus with Merlot is to craft an accessible, food-friendly wine that can be enjoyed on a regular basis.

There’s no denying that Merlot’s popularity is on the upswing. California Merlot consumption was 19.3 million cases in 2009 in the U.S., growing dramatically from the 2.8 million cases sold in 1994. It’s the perfect variety for white and blush wine drinkers who may be expanding their vinous horizons to reds.

And Alderwood Creek’s Merlot is an easy wine to like, thanks to its soft, approachable and luscious character. The 2009 vintage, like several past releases, has a distinctive black olive component to its flavor spectrum, making it a nice match for an olive-topped pizza.

About Merlot

Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon but with less tannin and fruit. Delivers earlier maturing wines. Often blended with Cabernet; on its own may soften with age, though fruit flavors may fade.

The description spoke of pairing it with olives, so we did, and yum yum it was. It was deeply flavorful and complimented the food well. A great selection!

Pleasant dry but lacking character and usual robustness of Merlot. See through.

Yum! Rich, red berries at first, black olives as it warms.

Really enjoyed this wine... expected it to be a bit young, but it was full flavored, mellow yet finished with a rich berry flavor. Had with a variety of cheeses - so am looking forward to having it with a lovely rich pasta dinner next.

This is probably the most delightful merlot I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. It was light and smooth.
