About This Wine

In France, the area where St. Emilion and Pomerol meet is considered almost sacred ground.

Likewise, in the upper Maremma area of Tuscany, a very special place has been identified for winegrowing. It’s where Bibbona and Bolgheri converge, and that is where Tenuta di Biserno was established.

A number of varieties are planted in the estate vineyards, including one that’s fairly rare to Italy: Cabernet Franc. But the soil and overall microclimate convinced the Biserno proprietors that Cab Franc could thrive there, and they have been proven to be prophetic. In fact, the variety provides a very important component of the “Insoglio del Cinghiale” cuvee.

It’s an unusual blend for Italy, at least from a historic perspective, comprised entirely of grapes with historic homes outside of Italy’s borders. In addition to Cab Franc, it includes Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. So while it may not taste “Italian,” it sure does taste good — yes, even with Italian cuisine.

The 2009 Insoglio del Cinghiale is a gorgeous wine laced with expressive red fruit, silky tannins and exceptional overall balance. Hints of mocha, espresso, spices and licorice add mid-palate sweetness and considerable complexity. This is a terrific effort and one of the finest wines being made in Bolgheri in its price range. The 2009 Insoglio is 32% Syrah, 31% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, vinified and aged predominantly in steel, with 20% French oak during the malos and 40% French oak for aging. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.
