About This Wine

Pinot Noir often is unapologetically described in feminine terms.

Smooth. Silky. Sexy. Seductive. Syrah is the exact opposite. Syrah is a manly wine. And not merely manly — it’s more like a manly man. John Wayne. Clark Gable. Gary Cooper. Anthony Quinn. Clint Eastwood. “A glass of wine?” you may ask of Mr. Eastwood. “Go ahead, make my day,” he might reply.

Syrah, particularly as crafted in California by a group of vintners who have come to be known as the “Rhone Rangers,” is a big, mouth-filling, long-finishing wine that can stain a wine glass and stand up to the thickest and juiciest of grilled steaks. That said, even with its massive structure, it can be very easy to simply sip and savor.

The 2010 Syrah from Cross Creek Winery successfully follows both Syrah pathways. It’s a big, assertive wine that is amazingly easy-drinking. How to explain this seeming paradox? Well, even manly men have a sensitive side.

About Syrah

Very dark, rich, powerful wines with great aging potential (as long as 50 years), yet still can be drunk relatively young. Distinct pepper, spice, cherry and leather flavors, with smooth, supple texture. Embodied in majestic wines from France, Australia and, increasingly, California.

I am mostly a cabernet fan, but this Syrah was out of this world. Big taste with an excellent balance.

I am not a typical fan of Syrah, but was very pleased with this offering. Ripe fruits, hint of dark chocolate flavors and pleasant to drink
