About This Wine

History is constantly being rewritten, and so it is with Cabernet Sauvignon.

Through most of wine-drinking history, this winegrape of France’s Bordeaux region was thought to be an ancient variety. It was only in recent years that genetic studies conducted at the University of California at Davis revealed Cabernet Sauvignon to be a cross of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

What does this mean as far as the flavor of the grapes and resulting wine are concerned? Nothing, really, but it’s the type of information that growers and vintners can use when selecting the clones to plant in specific microclimates. Information is king when it comes to growing world-class winegrapes, and Cabernet Sauvignon has emerged as the king of red winegrapes.

Old Train Depot sources grapes from quality-focused growers all over California, then crafts a tasty blend that shows off Cabernet’s most endearing and enduring qualities. That makes it a wine for the history books.

About Cabernet Sauvignon

Deep color and richness with the potential to age a long time, and better still if aged in oak before bottling. Classic flavors blackcurrant, plum, cherry and spice. The most popular varietal of red wine in America.

Somewhat less than fair. Too much of a sweet cherry taste. Not dry enough at all. Overly strong in berry and cherry aromas. This is not a good thing for a cabernet. An overwhelming impression of Kool-Aid for children and so not a wine for the rest of us.

I typically prefer white wine but this Cabernet Sauvignon had slightly sweet but smooth taste.

Interesting Label and a memorable wine. Reading the other three tasting notes you might be going what is up here. The 3 star rating, perhaps a bit harsh, is clear that this is not a traditional cabernet sauvignon profile. If you like Zin-blend with a hint of sweetness and strong cherry of a pinot you will likely enjoy this. As to the five scale rating, this is a very distinctive concoction, in that the tobacco notes are well belended with the oak. At times it felt very like a ruby port without the weight. Suggested movie pairing: I watched midnight in paris with this, seemed to fit.

We normally have not enjoyed many Cabs but this one was outstanding. Also, "Bramble Ridge" Cab was excellent.
