About This Wine

The image of the wine “cooperative,” or “co-op” for short, is changing.

And leading the way is Winzerkeller Andau, in the Austrian community of Andau, less than a mile from Austria’s border with Hungary. There, just under 300 farmers contribute winegrapes to the co-op, which transforms like types into some truly marvelous wines.

In generations past, quantity was the name of the game when it came to selling grapes to co-ops. But now, growers are being encouraged to limit their yields in order to improve quality, and are being paid a premium for their efforts. That makes a huge difference in the finished wines, which today are right at home alongside bottlings from family estate wineries.

Winzerkeller Andau’s 2010 Saint Laurent is a good example. It’s medium-bodied and nicely balanced, with an aroma and flavor spectrum that mirrors Pinot Noir in many ways. It’s a tasty testament to the quality-focused grape growers of Austria.
