101 Wine Tips

Tip # 28
Most wines do not need to be decanted, but should you encounter one that does, simply pour the entire contents of the bottle into a glass container, let it sit for five minutes, then pour it back in the bottle using a funnel. The wine will be sufficiently aerated and ready to pour into wine glasses. The most likely candidates for decanting: very old wines that have developed sediment in the bottle, and very young wines that need encouragement to “open up” (i.e., reveal their aromas and flavors).

Top 10 North American Wine Destinations
##3 - Las Vegas

Yes, you read that correctly. A city that's in the middle of a desert... where temperatures regularly soar well above 100 degrees during the summer months... where no commercial grapevines are planted... is one of the most noteworthy wine destinations - not only in North America, but anywhere in the world. The reason for this is simple: As Las Vegas imploded old-school casinos and replaced them with mega-resorts over the past decade, it was able to attract some of the world's most acclaimed chefs. Those chefs created destination restaurants, and a big part of their focus [more]

For the ultimate wine country experience in California, there is only one place to stay: the Meadowood resort in the Napa Valley town of St. Helena. But there is one problem with staying at Meadowood: You may never want to leave. And that would make exploring the area's wineries problematic. Among the amenities at Meadowood: * Championship croquet... [more]

##5 - Dundee Hills, Oregon

Over the years, I've driven through the little town of Dundee in Oregon's Willamette Valley literally hundreds of times. Even with such frequency, I have never ceased to be strangely entertained by the sight of a small building that is painted in impossible-to-ignore purple and typically is adorned by a sign bearing some sort of...
