About This Wine
Traditionally, Primitivo grapes were used by Italian vintners to enhance the body of lesser varieties.
Things began to change when genetic “fingerprinting” revealed Primitivo to be identical to California’s wildly popular Zinfandel variety. Before long, plantings of Primitivo increased, and while some remained destined for boosting blends, more and more varietal bottlings were being made.
Today, Primitivo is crafted in a rustic style by some winemakers, while others use American oak barrels to emulate the style of California Zinfandel. Doppio Passo did not reveal its barrel aging strategy to us, but there’s no mistaking the California Zin style of the estate’s 2015 Primitivo.
Two batches of Primitivo grapes were used to make the wine, one picked at the peak of ripeness, and one about a month later. Using a time honored method for combining the two batches, Doppio Passo crafted a wine that’s deep, dark and delicious.

Cabernet Sauvignon Ice Cream Our friends at Alexander Valley Vineyards came up with this wonderful recipe a few years ago. We've tried it with Cabernet Sauvignon as the recipe calls for, as well as Merlot, Primitivo, Cabernet Franc and Zinfandel... and every time, it turns out delicious! It's best made with an ice cream maker, and if you have such a machine, it's extremely easy to assemble. Enjoy! Get The Recipe
