About This Wine
Looking for an easy-drinking red wine? You’ve come to the right place!
Iron Rock Cellars is known for crafting a number of exceptional varietal wines, and its Merlot always is a standout. Merlot is one of the principal varieties of the Bordeaux region in France, and was brought to California in the mid-19th century.
Historically, vintners have used Merlot as a blending grape to soften a wine, usually with Cabernet Sauvignon. Its tannins are less forceful than those of Cabernet, one reason Merlot now is popular as a varietal wine. Most of California’s Merlot vines are planted in Lodi/San Joaquin County, along with Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Monterey County.
The 2016 Iron Rock Cellars Merlot taps top vineyards from around the state, and transforms perfectly ripened grapes into an easy-to-love cuvee. Ideal for serving alongside simple beef or lamb dishes, it could be used by Webster to define the word “mellow.”
Similar to Cabernet Sauvignon but with less tannin and fruit. Delivers earlier maturing wines. Often blended with Cabernet; on its own may soften with age, though fruit flavors may fade.
