About This Wine:
That wasn’t the case back in the mid-1980s, however, when only a few plantings of Rhone grapes could be found in California’s Central Coast region. But a handful of vintners were convinced that those varieties could work there, including Viognier — and this was at a time when Viognier plantings had shrunk to a mere 50 acres in the Rhone’s Condrieu and Chateau-Grillet areas.
Planting Viognier was a bold move, especially since Americans were drinking lots of Cabernet Sauvignon, lots of Chardonnay, and not a great deal of anything else. But Rhone varieties ultimately helped awaken American palates to new possibilities — new aromas, new flavors and new food-pairing partners.
The 2016 Chalkstone Viognier proves that those early Central Coast growers and vintners were on to something. It’s viscous, rich, full bodied, brimming with fruit flavors and has a long, satisfying, smile-inducing finish.
