About This Wine:
Inadequate rainfall was a problem, but the abundance of water in the Columbia River provided a solution. The challenge was to get that water where it needed to be. The answer was to build a concrete dam across the Columbia River, raising the water level and diverting it south into the Grand Coulee, an immense natural channel carved by Ice Age Floods.
Construction of the dam was included in the Depression-era Public Works Administration, and on July 16, 1933, the first stake was driven into place, initiating a nine-year construction project to build the largest structure in the world: the Grand Coulee Dam.
The Merlot-based “Coulee Reserve” Red Blend from Mayfield pays homage to that structure and its impact on the Columbia Valley. The palate is plush and weighty, the finish is long… and the rest is history.
