About This Wine:
Petite Sirah (or Durif, the grape’s original name) was created by botanist Francois Durif in Montpellier, France around 1880. It is a cross between Syrah and a rare grape variety called Peloursin.
While its origins are in France, Petite Sirah now is considered an “American Heritage Grape.” It earned its name from the size of its berries, but it's anything but a “small wine.” In fact, it can be one of the biggest, most powerful wines produced in America. It’s loved for its extraordinary deep color and flavors of blueberry, blackberry and red cherry.
If the name seems familiar to you, that may be because it’s frequently blended with Zinfandel to improve Zin’s color, or to add tannins for better structure. On its own, as the 2017 Ashfield Cellars bottling demonstrates, it’s a wine that will dazzle and delight your palate.
