2012 FrostWatch Vineyard & Winery Bennett Valley California Merlot

Lush, juicy flavors of dark berries, cherries and plums are supported by sturdy yet polished tannins and the palate-whisking natural acidity that’s found in most wines from Bennett Valley. Still quite young, this Merlot will benefit from aeration now, or with another year or two of cellaring.

About This Wine:

Matanzas Creek Winery made Sonoma County’s Bennett Valley famous long before the region became an American Viticultural Area (AVA), in 2003. A handful of small, family-run wineries have cropped up in Bennett Valley since Matanzas was founded in 1977.

The AVA, located southeast of Santa Rosa, overlaps a portion of the Sonoma Mountain and Sonoma Coast AVAs and offers well-drained benchland soils, and morning fog and afternoon marine breezes that keep a lid on otherwise high temperatures during the growing season.

Owner & Winemaker Brett Raven chose the name Frostwatch for the period of time in early spring when below-freezing temperatures overnight can damage the vines’ tender buds and shoots. Frostwatch is not open to the public and bottles less than 2,000 cases of wine a year.
