About This Wine:

Spain is the grape’s primary stomping ground, accounting for at least half of that acreage. Two regions in Spain dominate the production — Ribera Del Duero and Rioja. More recently, the variety has been experiencing great success in California — notably in the Central Coast region’s Paso Robles Highlands District.

You may never have heard of Paso Robles Highlands because there are no tasting rooms in the area. It’s a great place to grow wine grapes — including Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Tempranillo — but it’s so remote that if there were a tasting room, they might still be waiting for their first visitor.

But it’s the job of our wine finders to unearth great wines from little-known areas, and they’ve found a beauty in the 2017 West Ridge Tempranillo. Brimming with fruit and earth impressions, it makes a wonderful companion to a meat-and-cheese plate that includes slices of Spanish ham.
