About This Wine:
After all, it gets its name from Spain’s acclaimed La Rioja region. And even though it’s somewhat under the radar, it actually is Argentina’s oldest wine-producing region, as Spanish missionaries first planted grapes there during the middle years of the 16th century.
Why is it lesser known than other Argentina wine regions? Probably because it’s a grueling seven-hour drive from Mendoza, passing through the province of San Juan along the way. Yet it’s the third most expansive grape-growing region in the country, trailing only Mendoza and San Juan.
San Juan has a tradition of fortified wines and raisins, whereas La Rioja is much better suited for producing wines of excellent quality. A good example is the 2018 Miguel Flores Malbec, which is beautifully balanced and cascades to an elegant finish — an experience that will help you remember La Rioja in the future.
