About This Wine:
In Spain, the grape variety goes by the name of Monastrell (pronounced moe-nah-strell). In France, as well as in Australia, it’s one of the varieties used to craft exceptional red blends (primarily from the Rhone in France, and known as G-S-M in Australia, the G being Grenache and the S being Syrah).
But when made as a varietal wine, Monastrell typically is a big, bold, smoky red that some have described as rustic. It’s believed that seafaring Phoenicians brought the variety to Spain as early as 500 B.C.
El Persa crafts an exceptional rendition of Monastrell, brimming with spicy fruit flavors that reveal layers of smoke and dark chocolate impressions. The winemaker suggests serving it alongside smoked meats and barbecued fare, and it’s also sublime with braised beef short ribs. The 2018 vintage is enjoyable now, or will continue to evolve in the bottle for a few years.
