About This Wine:
You’re about to discover that with the 2019 vintage from Chalkstone. For many years, Vermentino grapes were utilized primarily as crunchy, juicy, sweet treats — known, less romantically, as table grapes.
But the vintners of northern Italy, particularly in the Liguria region, understood Vermentino’s value in making wine. The variety also is widely planted on the island of Sardinia, where the wines are crisp, citrusy and generally spend no time in oak barrels. It’s also the most widely planted white grape on the island of Corsica, where high altitude and hot climate vineyards produce more full-bodied wines with heady aromas.
Vermentino is relatively rare in California, but there’s an exceptional vineyard in Sonoma County’s Carneros growing area that includes a plot. That is the source tapped by Chalkstone, which transforms those grapes into a floral, bright and fresh wine that will dazzle your palate — especially on a hot day.
