About This Wine:

Take the musque clone of Sauvignon Blanc as an example. The clone was imported to California from the Viticoles d’Arboriculture at Pont-de-la-Maye in the Gironde region of France in the early 1960s by University of California at Davis professor William Hewitt. It then was popularized by Ventana Vineyards’ Doug Meador, who discovered that the clone did not show excess vegetal character in the cooler climate of Monterey County.

But by the 1980s, with the popularity of Chardonnay on the rise, many venerable Sauvignon Blanc musque clone vineyards were transformed into Chardonnay vineyards. It simply was a matter of commerce.

Now, however, that clone is experiencing something of a comeback, led in part by growers in the South Coast region of California. Iron Rock makes an exceptional “Musque Clone” Sauvignon Blanc, as the floral, fresh and thirst-quenching 2019 vintage demonstrates. Yes, what goes around comes around.
