2019 Miguel Flores La Rioja, Argentina Malbec

In the middle of fertile oases and arid mountain ranges, the cultivated surface of the Famatina Valleys — between the Sierras de Velasco and Famatina — glistens green in the spring and summer before turning amber in the fall.

The valleys are characterized by hot days, mild nights and little rain. The interaction of altitude, latitude and great solar exposure determines differential temperatures and humidity variables in the semiarid environment. While there are many grape varieties that thrive in this climate, responding with unique and intense expression in the wines, Malbec is the flagship variety. It has been Argentina’s most cultivated variety since 2011, and it truly shines in La Rioja, as the 2019 vintage from Miguel Flores demonstrates.
