2019 Iron Rock Yolo County, California Verdejo
Soft, refreshing and brimming with spice-tinged fruit, this is an easy-drinking wine ideal for warm-weather sipping.
About This Wine:
Situated just past the Sacramento Airport, about an hour from downtown San Francisco (if the traffic cooperates), Yolo County is beyond Northern California’s urban sprawl, with vineyards producing more than 30 grape varieties — including Verdejo.
Grown almost exclusively in Spain, Verdejo (pronounced vurr-day-ho) is a wine worth trying, especially if you’re a fan of Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. And chances are you’ve not encountered it before, unless you happened to take a trip along the wine trails of Spain’s Rueda region.
But Iron Rock Cellars tracked down a supply of Verdejo grapes from Yolo County, and produced a taste of Spain in the variety’s signature soft and balanced style. The 2019 vintage is brimming with tropical fruit and yellow fruit flavors, and the wine pairs beautifully with appetizers or tapas — a taste of Spain from an undiscovered California wine region.
