But in recent years, there has been a gradual shift to making more white and rosé-style wines. The reason is a combination of craft and commerce: The world consumption ratio of whites to reds is 1:2, but in the Rhone Valley it’s 1:10.

An equally important factor is that the red grape varieties grown in the Rhone Valley lend themselves perfectly to rosé-style wines. And that means California’s so-called “Rhone Rangers” now have a “new” style to embrace in addition to their single-variety wines and multi-variety cuvees.
