About This Wine:
When that began in eastern Washington in 1903, it unlocked the potential of the area’s rich volcanic soils and sunny, arid climate. Before long, Italian and German grape varietals were planted in the Yakima Valley, and vineyard acreage expanded.
By 1914, vineyards had sprung up all over the valley, but the implementation of Prohibition in 1920 put a damper on wine grape production. It wasn’t until long after the repeal of Prohibition — in the 1960s — that planting began again in earnest. Today, there are five American Viticultural Areas within the Yakima Valley AVA: Red Mountain (established in 2001), Horse Heaven Hills (2005), Rattlesnake Hills (2006), Snipes Mountain (2009) and Naches Heights (2011).
The Yakima Valley has become a trusted source for quality Merlot grapes, including those used to craft the 2020 Merlot from Louwala. It’s a delicious wine of good depth and undeniable heritage.
