About This Wine:
The variety is native to southwestern France and almost always is included in the fine blends of Bordeaux. But because it’s so full-bodied and bold, it typically represents no more than about a tenth of those cuvees, bolstering the color and tannin.
Petit Verdot also is grown in Australia, Chile and Spain, and its strongholds in the United States are California and Washington state — again, used primarily for blending. But when a talented vintner decides to place the variety in the spotlight, it and the resulting cuvee can really shine.
Such is the case with the 2019 “Winemaker’s Blend” Red Wine from Bodega Mariposa. Petit Verdot accounts for more than half of the blend, joined by equal parts Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The finished wine shows exceptional balance and good weight, with a fruitful and spicy aroma that is both enticing and ethereal.
