About This Wine:
But it wasn’t always that way. Through most of vinous history, it was believed that they were unique varieties. The origins of the Primitivo grape can be traced to Croatia in the 1700s. It’s believed it was brought to the Puglia region of Italy across the Adriatic.
The name Primitivo has its roots in the Latin “primativus” and the Italian “primaticcio,” both of which mean “early ripening.” It’s this characteristic of the grape that gives Primitivo wines more structure and greater aging potential.
While Primitivo and Zinfandel are the same variety, there is a big difference in their styles. Zinfandel wines tend to be more “fruit-sweet” and have a higher alcohol content. Primitivo wines lean toward being jammy and intense. The 2021 Montesensese Primitivo exudes the Italian style, which may explain why it’s so wonderful with food.
