Bob Oatley is a proud and passionate Australian who is credited with pioneering Australian wine to the rest of the world. Oatley owned Rosemount Estate, for several decades the most recognized and successful family-owned Australian winery.

His success with Chardonnay put Rosemount on the world wine map. His success with Shiraz, especially in the US, was instrumental in establishing that varietal as a permanent feature on wine lists and retail shelves in America.

Today he heads a family business that is run by eldest son Sandy and operates in diverse hospitality-related areas from grapes and cattle, through wineries and sailing, to popular and luxury tourism at Hamilton Island on Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef.

He is as famous for his wine as he is for sailing, having won the prestigious Admirals Cup, in Cowes, England and four consecutive Sydney to Hobart yacht races with his Wild Oats series of super maxi yachts. The Sydney to Hobart is rated the world’s toughest long distance ocean race.

Bob’s first international trade success was during the 1960’s with Papua New Guinea’s coffee and cocoa industry - he exported the beans around the world. He was later recognized by Queen Elizabeth II and awarded the British Empire Medal for his contribution to the country’s economy.

What he learned about agriculture, international commodity trading, and developing and expanding international markets he brought to the Australian wine industry.

About The Winemaker

Robert Oatley’s director of winemaking, Larry Cherubino, is acknowledged as one of leading the lights of contemporary Australian wine. Acclaimed critic James Halliday anointed Cherubino Winery of the Year in the Australian Wine Companion 2011, citing one of the many reasons as his “focus on single-vineyard and single-region wines ... a path that more and more Australian wine producers must follow if we are to fundamentally change the negative perceptions of the diversity, the quality and the style of our wines, and of our aspirations for the future.” While Cherubino was recognised by Halliday specifically for his mastery of Western Australia’s premier regions, he is widely acknowledged for his vast experience in regions across Australia and around the world.
